Straight answers to common Pittsburgh garage door questions. No filler.
General
What areas does Pitt Garage Door serve?
We serve Pittsburgh and the surrounding suburbs including Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Cranberry Township, Monroeville, Sewickley, Squirrel Hill, and many other communities throughout Allegheny County and neighboring counties.
Do you work on all garage door brands?
Yes. We service all major residential and commercial brands including Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, CHI, LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman. If it is a garage door, we can work on it.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Pitt Garage Door is licensed, bonded, and insured in Pennsylvania. All technicians carry proper credentials and we carry liability insurance and workers compensation.
Do you offer warranties on your work?

Repair
How long does most garage door repair take?
Spring replacement takes 60-90 minutes. Opener repair takes 45-60 minutes. Cable replacement takes about an hour. Panel replacement takes 2-3 hours. Most single-issue repairs are done in one visit.
Can you replace just one damaged panel?
Often yes, if the door is under 15-20 years old and panels are still available. For older doors, panels may be discontinued and a full replacement is more cost-effective. We check availability before recommending either path.
My garage door is making a grinding noise. Should I stop using it?
A grinding or scraping noise usually means something is wrong with the hardware: rollers, tracks, or opener drive. Stop using the door if it is grinding, hesitating, or reversing unexpectedly. Continuing to operate it can damage additional components.
Can I get a price estimate over the phone?
For standard jobs: spring replacement, opener repair, cable replacement: yes, we can usually give a firm range over the phone. For panel replacement, full door installation, or unusual configurations, we need to see it first.
How do I know if I need a new door or just a repair?
If the door is under 15 years old and the damage is limited to one panel or a mechanical component, repair is usually right. If the door is older, heavily damaged, or panels are unavailable, replacement often makes more financial sense. We give you both prices and a straight recommendation.
Springs
What are the signs my garage door spring is broken?
The most obvious signs: the door will not open at all, you heard a loud bang from the garage, there is a visible gap in the spring coil, the door opens only an inch or two before stopping, or the cable has come off the drum. Any of these means call for service immediately.
What is a torsion spring?
A torsion spring is the heavy coiled spring mounted above your garage door on a steel shaft. It stores energy when wound and uses that energy to lift the door. Most modern residential garage doors use one or two torsion springs.
What is an extension spring?
Extension springs run horizontally along the tracks on either side of the door. They stretch to store energy rather than twist. Common on lighter doors and in older homes. Each side has one extension spring.
Should I replace one spring or both?
We recommend replacing both springs even if only one broke. Springs age at the same rate: if one failed, the other is close behind. Replacing both at once saves a second service call and second labor charge.
How long do garage door springs last in Pittsburgh?
Standard torsion springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles. At 3-5 door uses per day, that is 5-7 years. Pittsburgh winters are particularly hard on spring steel: cold temperatures cause brittleness that can shorten lifespan. High-cycle springs rated at 20,000+ cycles last significantly longer.
Why should I not replace the spring myself?
Torsion springs hold 200-300 pounds of stored tension. When they snap or are improperly released, that energy releases instantly and can cause severe injury. Proper winding bars, safety cables, and training are required. This is not a DIY repair: garage door spring injuries are among the most common serious DIY accidents.
Openers
How long do garage door openers last?
Most residential openers last 10-15 years with normal use. Chain-drive openers tend to wear faster than belt or screw drives. Smart features may become outdated before the motor fails. If your opener is 12+ years old and showing issues, replacement is often more cost-effective than repair.
My opener runs but the door does not move. What is the problem?
This is almost always a broken spring or snapped cable. The opener is working, but the door is too heavy or disconnected for it to lift. Check for a visible gap in the spring above the door. If you see one, stop using the door and call for spring repair.
What is the best garage door opener brand?
LiftMaster is the brand we recommend most for residential use. It has strong reliability data, good warranty coverage, and the myQ smart platform is the most mature in the category. Chamberlain is made by the same parent company and is nearly identical. Genie is a solid alternative.
Can I add smart control to my existing opener without replacing it?
Often yes. LiftMaster and Chamberlain make the myQ Smart Garage Hub, which adds Wi-Fi monitoring and control to most openers made since 2001. We can assess compatibility and install it during any service call. Cost is typically $30-$50 plus labor.
What types of garage door opener drives are there?
Three main types. Chain drive: uses a metal chain, less expensive, louder: fine for detached garages. Belt drive: uses a rubber belt, quieter: better for attached garages near living space. Screw drive: uses a threaded steel rod, moderate noise, fewer moving parts. Most homeowners with attached garages prefer belt drive.
Cost
How much does garage door repair cost in Pittsburgh?
Most repairs fall between $150 and $600 depending on the issue. Spring replacement runs $200-$400. Opener repair runs $150-$350. Full opener replacement averages $400-$650. See our full Pittsburgh pricing guide for a breakdown by service type.
Do you charge for the initial estimate?
No. We give you a complete price before we start. No charge for the estimate itself.
Why do spring replacement quotes vary so much?
Spring size and type matter significantly. A small extension spring on a lightweight single door costs much less than a large torsion spring on a heavy double door. The number of springs (single vs. double spring systems) also changes the price. Get a specific quote for your door configuration.
Are after-hours emergency calls more expensive?
After-hours calls typically carry a higher service fee due to the non-standard hours. We tell you the premium before the technician heads out. It is usually $50-$150 above standard rates depending on time of day.
Emergency
Do you offer 24/7 emergency garage door service in Pittsburgh?
Yes. We dispatch emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including weekends and holidays. Call (412) 990-2389 for emergency service.
What should I do if my garage door is stuck open?
Do not leave your home unattended with the door open. Lock all interior doors connecting the garage to the house. Move valuables out of visible range. Call us immediately: an open garage door is a security emergency.
Can I drive my car with a broken garage door spring?
If you need to get out and the door is stuck closed, you can disengage the opener with the emergency release cord (the red cord hanging from the rail). Pull it down and slide the door up manually. The door will be heavy without the spring: get help if needed. Once your car is out, do not continue operating the door until the spring is replaced.
Service Area
Do you serve the Pittsburgh suburbs, or only the city?
We serve Pittsburgh proper and the surrounding metro area including Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Cranberry Township, Monroeville, Sewickley, Squirrel Hill, and many more communities throughout Allegheny County.
What is the typical response time in Pittsburgh suburbs?
Most suburban locations get a 60-90 minute response time during business hours. Emergency calls are dispatched immediately regardless of location.
